Gordon Massie
about
I photograph landscapes shaped by human intention.
My work focuses on places that have been cultivated, settled, contested or left behind. I am interested in how land carries the marks of labour, occupation and change.
I work with a documentary approach, returning to locations over time. Revisiting sites allows subtle shifts to surface — seasonal change, shifting structures, signs of continued use or abandonment.
Across projects including Empty Spaces, Contested Landscape, The Harvest and The Remotest Settlement, I explore how people shape land and how land holds evidence of that shaping.
These photographs are records of specific places, and also reflections on presence, power and memory.
Photography, for me, is a way of paying attention.
